Protagonist Factionmercenary

The Greymanes

The Greymanes are Kliff's mercenary company — a tight-knit group of fighters who have been together long enough to call each other family. The game begins the night a rival faction tears that apart.

Who They Are

The Greymanes are a mercenary company operating in the war-torn continent of Pywel. Official story material describes them as bound together more closely than most mercenary outfits — the word used is family, specifically 'family in name.' Before the Black Bears' raid, they maintained a position in the fragile balance of power between the factions of Pailune.

The faction's fall is the inciting event of the game. A sudden night attack by the Black Bears kills some Greymanes and scatters the rest across the continent. What remains is Kliff, a camp in Hernand, and the task of finding whoever survived.

The Camp at Hernand

After losing their base to the Black Bears, Kliff and whatever Greymanes made it out alive established a camp in the Hernand region. This camp functions as the player's home base throughout the game — a place that can be rebuilt and upgraded as Kliff reunites with more of his faction. It's tied to the game's camp management and progression systems, and it grounds the otherwise large-scale story in something specific and personal.

The Rebuilding

Rebuilding the Greymanes is the central thread of Crimson Desert's story. It's not just about gathering fighters — it's about recovering what made the faction worth fighting for in the first place. The bonds between Kliff, Oongka, Yann, and Naira are what the narrative keeps coming back to, and their reunion is the emotional payoff the game is building toward.
